Bontrager R3 Road Tire

Bontrager's R3 Road Tire is perfect for training, racing and everything else! The round profile and lightly textured tread offer low rolling resistance and grip like glue in the corners. The 120tpi casing and folding beads deliver a wonderfully supple ride and lighten the tire considerably.       I have only been riding on R3 700x32s for a little over a month. I feel they're too slow in comparison to 700x23c tires that I have been riding on for 6 years. Considering switching to R3 700x23s.

        I've been a fan of the R3 since it came out. I typically get one flat every 2-3,000 miles, and never a blowout. Confidence-inspiring on descents. I own a shop; I can ride any tire I want. Many companies would give me tires for free. I actually pay for these. My only complaint is their lifespan; tire wear is greatly accelerated when you ride in the hills, and that's the only riding I do. I'll get about 1500 miles out of a rear tire; a lighter rider in less-challenging terrain will do better.

            My wife and I went tubeless using the R3. Within 2 months we had 3 flats between us and the tires were damaged enough that we had to get 2 new tires to remain tubeless. I use this bike to compete in triathlons, so I have switched to another tire brand, I just don't trust these tires. I have a new set of tires to put on my wife's bike also. Tubeless might be okay, but not these tires.

              The only tire I have been using, so not a lot of rereference. I do 2500km with the back tire and I am 87kg and the roads I ride are not always the best. I only have flats near the end of the tire's life. I can't really evaluate the traction, I feel very confident riding the bike.

              These tires came with a new Madone 5.2. They have lasted for 3800mi with the cord just starting to show through. I had no flats even with the high mileage and all of the stuff that I have ran over on the road. The tires have a lot of grip and I always had confidence in high speed cornering with them. Last year I used Bontrager R1 tires and had to replace them every 1500mi due to excessive wear, so these have been a big improvement. I would highly recommend these tires

              Overall, I was not impressed with the Bontager R3 due to the many flats encountered during cycling. I am an avid cyclist of approximately 1000-1500 km a month during the summer, most of my riding is on the pavement with about 5 percent on dirt/gravel/rough roads. I have had many other tires and encountered flats approximately 1 or 2 times during the typical 3500km lifespan. These R3 tires I was encountering flats especially on the back tire every 250km. I even put stronger/thicker tubes and helped slightly but still created grief. I put these tires in the garbage can after only 1500km. I am about 195 lbs. and a strong cyclist so weight and power perhpas to much for this lightweight tire of approximately 200 grams. The R1 tire came as factory on my Trek Domane bike and had much better success. These R3 tires are lightweight and fast and would only recommend these on paved roads with very little debris. I'm not road racing and value puncture resistance higher than speed. There are better tires out there.

              Felt great for the first few rides then it got a slow leak. I had to stop every few miles to pump it up and limp home. I would have changed it but darkness was coming on fast and the mosquitoes were vicious. Finally it gave up the ghost about a mile from the finish. I had to walk the last mile. Bummer. Flat tire in less than 200 miles - about the third ride - same as the previous reviewer. Last time I get one of these.

              I have been using the R3 tires on a pair of Race Lite TLR wheels set up tubeless all season now as a racing/training wheelset and the combo stunningly excels at both. When I don't have a number pinned on, the tires have proven to have great flat protection and incredibly comfortable.I have only punctured once after a summer with scores of hours on the bike--the puncture mostly sealed itself, though I added a little more sealant, and had to pump it up twice more to feel secure jumping back on the next day. They do require a substantial amount of elbow grease to bead the tires on the rim, since they fit incredibly tight, and for first time tubeless users, I'd recommend either having your local shop set them up, or at least using an air compressor. I've run the tires with a little lower pressure, (~95 psi, and I'm 145 lbs) and the R3/Race Lite combo has been comfier than any 32 hole rim with wider tires than I've ridden. The sensation they provide on the road is a little disconcerting at first, since they greatly reduce road 'buzz', and make you wonder if you've got a flat, but there's no noticeable increase in rolling resistance, and still corner remarkably predictably. To my surprise, the tire's greatest strength was in the corners. The casing isn't as supple as a tubular, but the freedom of not having any resistance from a tube along with the lower tire pressure and the remarkably grippy compound greatly improved my confidence on irregular corners. The tires conformed very nicely to uneven pavement blocks and cracks even while hitting corners hard in criterium races. I raced the tires in 2 rainy criteriums where I watched Pro license holders wash out on corners right next to me using (very expensive) cotton tubulars. The confidence they afforded me was surprising. With a wider rim the profile of the tire on the rim took a little getting used to, but actually helped improve my cornering: the tires don't 'break' into corners as quickly, and allow more gradual, confident handling in a way that I can only call 'mature'. My only gripe is that the casing/bead is a little stiff, which is likely a result of the flat resistant layer. If you want a tire that's a little softer, lighter, and maybe grippier, go with the R4 but for a tire that's great for riding a racing, the R3 ticks all the boxes

              My bike came with R1 tires. I found they did not roll smoothly and they seemed to cling to the road. In looking on line, the weight was over 300 g as well with only 60 thread count. I decided on trying their R3 which has a 120 thread count and were much lighter tires. I found the rolling resistence was much less on the R3 and the bike just moved better and offered a smoother ride. Going up hills appeared to be done with less effort. I choose these tires over the Grand Prix's. I found myself really liking these tires. However after my 3rd ride without going over glass or anything unusual, when I went to get my bike the next day, the front tire was flat. I found a small hole in the middle of the tube. I hope this is not going to be a common trend with this tire. If it is, I will report back. But besides that flat, I was very pleased with the ride and found this upgrade more important that upgrading brakes or derail's. The R3's seem to be very good tires.
